Garmin Forerunner 70 sports watch review – Zerge's take
Zerge's honest opinion on the Garmin Forerunner 70.
Who is this watch for?
The Garmin Forerunner 70 is the first Garmin for those who have outgrown smartwatch-level activity tracking but aren't ready – or willing – to pay a premium price for a dedicated sports watch. It is the direct successor to the Forerunner 55, and compared to that, it received a significant upgrade: an AMOLED display, touchscreen, training load tracking, route navigation and a vastly expanded list of sport profiles.
I recommend this watch to anyone who takes running seriously – whether that's road, trail or treadmill. You can also pair it with a cycling speed and cadence sensor, though a power meter and offline maps are not part of its feature set. If you want to stay in the Garmin ecosystem without spending a fortune, the Forerunner 70 is a surprisingly strong entry point – just without the more specialised sport-specific features.
If you're considering the Forerunner 170 alongside it: that model adds a barometric altimeter, open water swimming, cycling power meter support, Garmin Pay and – in the Music version – music storage. For most everyday users though, the 70 is more than enough. The Forerunner 70 is not a compromised watch – it's a smartly priced entry into the real Garmin sports watch world.

What you'll love about the Garmin Forerunner 70
- The AMOLED display is surprisingly readable even in direct sunlight – compared to the MIP screen of the Forerunner 55, this is a completely different league, and the touchscreen works naturally alongside it.
- Training Readiness and Training Status at this price point is almost unbelievable – these are exactly the load and readiness tracking features that until now were only available on the more expensive Forerunner and Fenix models.
- The Quick Workout creator is a small but brilliantly practical addition: walk out the door, tell the watch how hard you want to push and for how long, and it instantly builds a structured workout for you – no phone, no app needed.
- Route following and the Up Ahead feature – breadcrumb navigation with predefined points like aid stations and climbs is invaluable for trail runners and hikers, and would have been unthinkable on an entry-level Garmin watch until now.
- Wrist-based Running Power works without a barometric altimeter – Garmin found a way to make it work, and the difference compared to altimeter-equipped models is barely noticeable in everyday training.
- More than 60 sport profiles, including ultra running, MTB, kayaking and ice hockey – all on a platform that can be conveniently configured from your phone, including custom data fields.
What I miss in the Garmin Forerunner 70
- No barometric altimeter – floor climb counting, accurate elevation tracking and the ClimbPro feature all fall away without it. Trail runners and hikers will feel this the most; the Forerunner 170 already offers a solution here.
- No open water swimming – that's a feature you'll first find on the Forerunner 170.
- No Garmin Pay – it might seem like a small thing, but anyone who's used to paying for a coffee from their wrist mid-run will notice its absence straight away.
- No music and no WiFi on the base model – the Forerunner 170 Music brings both, but at a higher price. If you listen to music on your phone during runs, it's not an issue, but worth considering in advance if it matters to you.
- No multi-band GPS – Garmin's single-band implementation is outstanding and hard to beat in most situations, but in narrow city streets or dense forest the occasional small deviation can still show up.
- No Timing Gates or race finish trimming – for anyone using the watch in races who wants to capture the finish line precisely, it may come as an unwelcome surprise that these small but useful features were left out, while ultra trail functions did make the cut.
A closer look at the Garmin Forerunner 70
The Forerunner 70 is the foundation of Garmin's current entry-level lineup – the Forerunner 70, 170 and 170 Music together form the range with which Garmin redefined in 2026 what a running watch at this price can be. Worth noting for context: the previous x65 generation was missing a base model – there was no Forerunner 65, only the 165, 265, 365 and 965. That gap is now filled.
For anyone buying their first Garmin sports watch, the Forerunner 70 will be a genuine revelation. Not because it does anything exotic, but because it does everything essential well, and the price needs no justification. First impressions out of the box are positive: 40 grams, a compact 42.6 mm case that sits comfortably on most wrists.
To be honest about the materials: the case, bezel and buckle are all plastic – the 170 already steps up to a metal buckle – but for an entry-level watch this is perfectly acceptable. What is genuinely pleasing is that the strap is replaceable: the 20 mm Quick Release system has a wide range of options, and Garmin itself offers ComfortFit woven bands in several colours. Silicone, fabric, leather – anyone planning to wear it daily will quickly appreciate that the right strap makes a real difference.
The colour options are fresh and bold: Black, Whitestone, Citron and Cool Lavender – the yellow-green and lavender are particularly refreshing choices for a sports watch. The start button differs in colour from the other buttons on every variant; the Tidal Blue shade – also found in the official strap range – sits on the border between cool pastel blue and mint, sporty and light at the same time.
Charging is wired via Garmin's 4-pin USB-C system, and battery performance is convincing: up to 13 days in smartwatch mode and around 23 hours with GPS – better than the Forerunner 170 (10 days and 20 hours), thanks to its leaner feature set. In practice this means charging once a week, which is respectable among AMOLED competitors – though within the broader Garmin lineup, it is still on the lower end.
The AMOLED display is a genuine step up from the MIP panel of the Forerunner 55: vivid, sharp and touch-enabled, while the five physical buttons are retained for use during workouts, in gloves or in the rain. Brightness reaches around 1500 nits, which is usable in sunlight, even if it doesn't match the Forerunner 970's peak.
The navigation is surprisingly capable at this price. There are no offline maps, but breadcrumb route following is straightforward from the Garmin Connect app: choose automatic or manual route planning, select a sport and a distance, and the watch puts together a route in minutes – then guides you along it, without POI points or extra information. For anyone wanting to plan an 8 km run in an unfamiliar area, or navigate a marked trail, this is a reliable and quick solution. It's not a full route planner, but it delivers what it promises.
A word on all-day wear. The Forerunner 70 is capable of it – Body Battery, sleep tracking, HRV, stress, pulse ox and Morning Report are all there. However, anyone thinking about true 24/7 wear with contactless payment should know upfront: Garmin Pay is not available on the 70, it's exclusive to the 170 series. This is not a technical shortcoming but a deliberate line drawn between the two models. If you take the watch off to charge in the morning and pay with your phone, it's not a problem. If you want your watch to handle every situation as a single device, the Forerunner 170 is worth a look.
Overall, the Forerunner 70 doesn't try to be everything for everyone – and that is its strength. For anyone who wants to run, track themselves accurately, and not overpay, this watch is hard to overlook in 2026.
