Garmin Edge 550 and Edge 850 Review

Zerge's honest take on the Garmin Edge 550 and 850 cycling computers

Who is it for?

The Garmin Edge 550 and 850 are ideal for cyclists who want serious training features in a compact form factor. The size works well on trail too, while the new ClimbPro feature and detailed training support make it a reliable companion both in training and racing.

Edge 550 – if you know your routes: for riders who stick to their favourite familiar routes and primarily want accurate performance data and training tracking, the 550 is more than enough. Basic navigation is included, but the focus is firmly on training.

Edge 850 – if you want to navigate too: for those who explore new routes, ride unfamiliar terrain, or prefer not to plan every ride in advance, the 850 is the one. Turn-by-turn voice navigation, searchable and swappable TopoActive maps – including third-party databases –, and an on-device route planner: this is the model that lets you set off confidently into unknown territory.

Both models are an excellent choice for road and trail alike, whether you're a tourer, a coach or a racer – ultimately, the decision comes down to one thing: do you need navigation, or do you just want to ride?

Recommended for

Accurate GPS, fast controls, vivid maps – for training and racing, on any terrain.

Garmin Edge 550 advantage

Accurate GPS data, fast button controls, vivid maps, detailed training and performance info. Best for riders who know their routes.

Garmin Edge 850 advantage

All of the above plus touchscreen, voice navigation, searchable maps and on-device route planner. Best for riders who explore new territory.

What you'll love about the Garmin Edge 550 and 850

  • Compact size, large display – The 2.7" screen was previously only found in larger Edge models, and now it comes in a smaller, MTB-friendly housing. Not too big, yet clearly visible on trail, and comfortable to store on your forearm.
  • Smart alerts – The new smart fueling and hydration alerts take into account temperature, humidity, route difficulty and your current training load. It doesn't just beep every few minutes – it actually adapts to the conditions.
  • Weather on screen – Wind and radar data come via your phone, with small icons showing wind direction and strength, temperature and humidity, plus storm warnings based on weather radar.
  • GroupRide+ interactive features – Group rides just got more interactive: you don't just see where others are, you can also compare heart rate, watt and cadence averages in real time. Instantly see who's pushing hard and who's cruising.
  • ClimbPro reimagined – It detects when you're climbing and automatically brings up the ClimbPro screen, even in picture-in-picture mode. See gradient, remaining elevation and distance – with a much cleaner, more readable layout than before.
  • Optimised for MTB – The new 5 Hz GPS sampling gives more accurate tracks on descents. Grit/Flow analysis, Trailforks maps and ForkSight help gravity riders see what's coming next and how technical it is.

Edge 850 exclusive features

  • Turn-by-turn voice navigation – the Edge 850 gives spoken directions so you don't have to keep looking at the screen. The Edge 550 has no voice navigation.
  • Searchable maps – the 850 offers more detailed maps that you can search and swap out. The 550 only has basic maps.
  • More detailed performance analysis – the 850 provides advanced metrics on training load, recovery and training effects.

What I miss in the Garmin Edge 550 and 850

  • Mount design – The mount itself is solid and reliable, but there's zero aerodynamics or visual appeal to the brackets. At this price point, a more modern, cleaner solution would be expected. The new Edge 550/850 mounts still look like old acquaintances.
  • Built-in inReach (missing from the 550/850) – A simplified inReach function would be a huge bonus – at minimum something that automatically sends a signal home in case of an accident. Full satellite communication isn't needed, but just being able to send a single alert would be reassuring.
  • Price and range – The Garmin Edge 550 and 850 start from €400, firmly targeting the premium segment. This narrows the audience, and there's a real contradiction here too: the ecosystem isn't seamless. For example, syncing between a Fénix watch and an Edge computer doesn't work perfectly – a missing feature at this price. Bryton computers range from €62 to €310 and are genuinely innovative; Wahoo sits between €330 and €620. Garmin's Edge series starts at €400, making the entry point significantly higher.

*Prices in the webshop are listed in HUF, but comparisons are given in EUR. This is because euro prices remain a consistent and comparable reference point even 2–3 years down the line.

Edge 550 vs Edge 850 – Key differences

Let's go through the differences in order of importance. The Edge 850 is around 20% more expensive than the Edge 550, but that price difference is justified by the following features:

  • Route planning and POI search (on-device route planner)
One of the Edge 850's biggest advantages is that the device itself can plan routes independently and perform keyword-based location searches. You can search for terms like "bakery" or "café" and it will instantly show the nearest options from the built-in POI database and navigate you there.
On longer rides this is invaluable: if you run out of water or need a rest stop, you don't have to reach for your phone – just type what you need and the Edge 850 instantly plots a route.
The Edge 550, by contrast, is more of a training-oriented device: it can follow pre-planned routes, but does not have on-device route planning, keyword search or automatic rerouting.

Summary:

  • Edge 850 = standalone GPS navigation for cyclists → route planning, rerouting, address and POI search → less phone dependency.
  • Edge 550 = training-oriented computer → follows pre-planned routes, no standalone navigation.
  • Speaker and voice navigation
The Edge 850 has a built-in speaker and a digital bike bell function, while the Edge 550 only uses a simple beeper. Thanks to the speaker, the Edge 850 delivers spoken navigation instructions, such as: "Turn right in 200 metres."
This is especially useful on descents or in traffic, when you don't want to keep glancing at the screen.
  • Touchscreen
The Edge 850 also has a touchscreen alongside its physical buttons, while the Edge 550 is button-only. This makes menu navigation on the Edge 850 faster and more intuitive, especially when using the map.
  • Garmin Pay – contactless payments
The Edge 850 supports Garmin Pay contactless payments, while the Edge 550 does not. In practice this has two benefits: you can pay immediately after a race, and you can make purchases even when your phone is safely stowed away.
  • Storage capacity
The Edge 850 has more storage (64 GB) compared to the Edge 550's 32 GB. For most users this won't make a real difference, unless you plan to use the device across multiple continents and want to store a large number of maps.

Conclusion

The Edge 850 clearly offers more for those who want standalone navigation, exploratory riding and a multi-function GPS. The Edge 550, on the other hand, is the ideal choice for athletes who primarily focus on training data and accurate following of pre-planned routes.

In depth: Garmin Edge 550 vs Edge 850 – Which one is right for you?

The Edge 550 and 850 pair is clearly built around the Edge 850: the 550 is the more stripped-back model, and both its price and feature set make clear that the 850 is the focus of the lineup. For most users, it will likely be the natural choice.

Display and maps

On the display front, Garmin has moved away from the previous transflective TFT panel and switched to an LCD panel. The new solution delivers a noticeably more vivid image with greater colour depth, paired with a completely redesigned graphical interface – a clear, visible step forward.

A particularly welcome addition is the ability to load third-party maps. For many trail riders, this alone could make the Edge 850 a complete standalone solution. The classic icon style and map layout is often more readable than Garmin's own map rendering.

Bell and voice navigation

The digital bike bell is a good idea in principle, though what's really missing is a simple touchscreen swipe, as Wahoo implemented it. That said, voice navigation is a genuinely useful feature and a clear advantage of the Edge 850 over the 550.

GroupRide and connectivity

Garmin is investing heavily in GroupRide, yet there's a notable contradiction here: it doesn't work without a mobile network connection. Meanwhile, the Fénix 8 Pro already includes inReach satellite communication – something that would be a logical addition to the Edge family too.

Garmin is clearly building a more closed ecosystem, but at this price point that won't be an easy sell to a wide audience.

Solar version and bundle packages

The Solar version has effectively been dropped from the 50-series Edge lineup: the Edge 850's battery life is roughly half of what the Edge 840 Solar offered. This is partly an understandable decision – statistics show that few riders actually made meaningful use of solar charging – but the reduction in battery life is nonetheless a clear step back.

The same goes for bundle packages: these have disappeared, which is positive in itself – everyone can now choose exactly what they actually need.
