Garmin Edge 1040 cycling computer review — Zerge evaluation
Zerge’s honest take on the Garmin Edge 1040 — assessed in May 2026, for a device released in 2022.
Who is it for and what is it good for?
This review was written in May 2026, while the Edge 1040 launched in June 2022. We are deliberately revisiting it now, because the 2025–2026 cycling computer landscape confirms exactly what we suspected: the Edge 1040 remains one of the best value-for-money Garmin cycling computers on the market.
The Edge 1040 is the large-screen, long-battery Garmin computer — perfect for serious cyclists who don’t want to buy a new device every year. The 3.5-inch display, multi-band GPS, ClimbPro, Power Guide and real-time Stamina are all on board — and they remain highly relevant features today. Battery life in multi-band GPS mode is 35 hours — still outstanding in 2026, given that the Edge 850 offers just 10–12 hours and the Wahoo ROAM 3 realistically around 20.
What is it not recommended for? If you want the brilliant, phone-like display of the Edge 1050 or Edge 850, the Edge 1040 is not your device — the transflective screen reads well in sunlight but cannot match the colour depth of the latest LCD panels. Spoken navigation, bike bell, Garmin Pay — none of these are available on the 1040. If those features matter to you, the Edge 850 is the right choice.
The Edge 1040’s place in the 2026 lineup
With the launch of the Edge 550 and 850, Garmin has officially classified the x40 series as “prior generation” — it will no longer receive major feature updates, only bug fixes. That said, it is still a very capable device. For anyone planning long-distance rides, multi-day touring or racing, the Edge 1040’s battery life remains unmatched in its category.
The Edge 1040 is the device that does everything a serious cyclist needs — priced below the Edge 1050 and above the Edge 550 — just without the 2025 display technology.

What you will love about the Garmin Edge 1040 cycling GPS
- Outstanding battery life (35 hours): 35 hours even in multi-band GPS mode — when the Edge 850 offers 10–12 and the Wahoo ROAM 3 realistically 15–20, this remains an unbeatable argument in 2026.
- Multi-band GPS accuracy: One of the best GPS tracking accuracies on the market — reliable in narrow streets, forests and mountain terrain alike.
- ClimbPro and Power Guide: ClimbPro previews every climb ahead, while Power Guide suggests race or training pacing targets for a given route — both remain relevant and practical features today.
- Real-Time Stamina: Shows how much energy you have left at your current intensity — a useful pacing tool for long rides and races alike.
- Large 3.5-inch display: Transflective screen that reads well in sunlight, with clear data presentation and data page layouts customisable directly from your phone.
- Map-based navigation and route planning: Preloaded maps, instant route calculation, POI search — everything a serious cycling navigator needs.
- Value for money in 2026: A fully featured, reliable device — priced above the Edge 550 and below the Edge 1050, yet beating both on battery life.
Garmin Edge 1040 shortcomings — what I felt was missing
- No spoken navigation, bike bell or Garmin Pay: Since the Edge 850 and Edge 1050, these have become expected features — none of them are available on the Edge 1040. If you need any of these, choose a newer model.
- Display quality in 2026: The transflective screen reads excellently in sunlight, but it cannot match the colour depth and visual experience of the new-generation LCD panels found on the Edge 850, Edge 1050 or Wahoo ROAM 3.
- No more major feature updates: With the launch of the Edge 550 and 850, Garmin has classified the x40 series as “prior generation” — it will no longer receive significant new features, only bug fixes. This is a real factor to consider when making a purchase decision in May 2026.
- No road hazard alerts or surface type detection: The community-based, Waze-style hazard warnings and road surface change notifications are not available on the Edge 1040 — these are features found on the Edge 1050 and Edge 850.
- Weight and size: At 133 grams and with its large 3.5-inch housing, the Edge 1040 is not in the compact computer category — those looking for a smaller device may find the Edge 850 a more modern and compact alternative. Mounting extra cameras or lights on the same bracket is not recommended due to the combined weight.
The Edge 1040 was released in 2022 — yet in May 2026 it remains an actively available and relevant device. To understand why, it is worth looking at where the market has gone over the past two years — what the Edge 1050, the Edge 550/850 and the Wahoo ROAM 3 brought, and what the Edge 1040 is missing as a result.
The Edge 1050 (2024) was the first Garmin cycling computer to deliver a genuine technological leap: a 1,000-nit phone-like LCD display, a real speaker, spoken navigation, a digital bike bell and Garmin Pay. It also introduced community-based Waze-style hazard alerts (potholes, aggressive dogs, obstacles), road surface type detection for gravel and MTB use, a completely revamped user interface powered by a faster processor, replaceable mount tabs and GroupRide features — including crash detection and mid-ride climb challenges. All of this at around 20 hours of battery life — less than half of the Edge 1040’s 35 hours.
The Edge 550 and Edge 850 (2025) essentially brought the Edge 1050’s technology down to the compact form factor. The Edge 850 received the same brilliant display, spoken navigation, bike bell, Garmin Pay, WiFi map downloads and 64 GB of storage — plus a full set of physical buttons that were missed on the 1050, which is a significant advantage in wet conditions. New features included 5Hz GPS sampling for descents, Timing Gates automatic timing, Smart Fueling nutrition guidance, altitude-corrected Power Guide and weather map overlays. The Edge 550 is the same device without the speaker, touchscreen and Garmin Pay. The trade-off is identical for both models: 10–12 hours of battery life — a third of the Edge 1040.
The Wahoo ROAM 3 (2025) moved toward the new-generation display, with spoken navigation and a bike bell. The claimed 25-hour battery life is realistically closer to 15–20 hours — and the platform had notable reliability issues at launch, including sensor dropouts, battery anomalies and route sync problems. The depth of the Garmin ecosystem — ClimbPro, Power Guide, Stamina, Garmin Connect integration and training support — is simply not comparable with Wahoo. Anyone relying on these features will not be switching to Wahoo.
What does all this mean for the Edge 1040? Over the past two years the market has clearly moved toward brilliant displays and audio features — but always at the cost of battery life. The Edge 1040 is missing spoken navigation, a bike bell, Garmin Pay, hazard alerts and road surface detection. These are real shortcomings. But what remains — 35 hours of battery life, multi-band GPS accuracy, ClimbPro, Power Guide and Stamina — cannot be matched more reliably or for longer by any other device in this category.
What is left for the Edge 1040 in 2026?
Battery life. 35 hours with multi-band GPS — no competitor in this category can match that in 2026. The Edge 850 and Wahoo ROAM 3 offer two to three times less. The Edge 1050 comes closer, but is significantly more expensive — and even that is only roughly half the Edge 1040’s battery life.
For anyone looking for a fully featured, reliable, large-screen Garmin computer — and values long-term dependability over the excitement of the latest release — the Edge 1040 remains one of the best choices available today.
Garmin Edge 1040 — a closer look
The Garmin Edge 1040 launched in June 2022 as the flagship of the large-screen Edge series. It was the most significant step in this category since the Edge 1000: a completely redesigned user interface, multi-band/dual-frequency GPS, USB-C charging, a metal rear mount and dramatically faster route calculation — all in a device that delivers 35 hours of battery life even in multi-band GPS mode.
Large display — once you go big, you won’t go back
The 3.5-inch transflective display reads excellently in sunlight — that is exactly what this technology was designed for. Once you switch to a large screen, the experience is hard to give up. Data pages are customisable directly from your phone, and external data fields and apps can be installed via the Connect IQ store. The combination of touchscreen and physical buttons means the device remains easy to use in rain or with gloves.
Power meter data — where the large display really shines
One of the Edge 1040’s standout features is how it presents performance data. Whether you use Garmin Rally pedals, Favero Assioma pedals or any other ANT+/Bluetooth Smart power meter — on the 3.5-inch screen the data appears not just as numbers but as clear, easy-to-read graphs. Real-time power graph, left/right leg balance, pedalling efficiency — all visible at a glance. For anyone training with a power meter, the large display is not a luxury, it is a tool.
ClimbPro — not just “when does it end”
ClimbPro works in a mature and reliable form on the Edge 1040. It is worth understanding what it is actually for: it is not about knowing when the climb ends — you can see that with your own eyes. ClimbPro is about knowing what you can afford to do. If you can see there are 4 km left and the gradient is about to jump from 6% to 10%, that is information — and whether to hold your current intensity or back off is a decision. On long, unfamiliar climbs, gran fondos and one-day events, this feature is what makes the device truly useful. It works best on pre-planned routes — and works perfectly with routes synced from Strava or Komoot, not just courses created in Garmin Connect.
Power Guide — race planning on the display
Power Guide creates a race or training plan for a given route: it takes terrain, gradients, weight and FTP into account and gives you section-by-section power targets. It is not a simple pacing tool — it is more like a Best Bike Split-style system that guides you directly on screen and can be adjusted mid-ride on a 1–10 scale. Particularly useful on long mountain one-day events, gran fondos or time trials — and it works with routes synced from Strava too.
Real-Time Stamina — knowing when to ease off
The Stamina feature shows in real time how much energy you have left at your current intensity. Push harder or hit a steep climb and it drops immediately — ease off and it slowly recovers. In practice it is surprisingly accurate: on long rides it is a reliable indicator of when to adjust your pace to make it to the end. The most effective use is when you are not yet fully depleted but Stamina is already signalling that your current intensity is unsustainable — that is when to back off, not when you are already in crisis.
GPS accuracy — where multi-band really matters
The introduction of multi-band GPS on the Edge 1040 was a genuine breakthrough. In dense forest, narrow city streets or mountain terrain — where conventional GPS becomes unreliable — the Edge 1040’s track stays precisely on the correct side of the road. Based on real-world testing, the Edge 1040’s GPS accuracy remains at the top of the market in 2026. One note: gradient display updates with a slight delay — this has been a known characteristic of Garmin’s calculation method since the Edge 1040. In return, the data it shows is more accurate than faster but less stable competitor solutions. For anyone who prioritises instant gradient readout over accuracy, this is a real compromise.
Garmin ecosystem — the depth no one else offers
The Edge 1040 comes with full Garmin Connect integration: training plans, Strava, TrainingPeaks, simultaneous pairing of multiple ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart sensors, Di2 and SRAM AXS support — including gear position display. Garmin Varia radar and light compatibility, with more audible alert tones than previous generations. Via Physio TrueUp, pairing with a Garmin watch gives an even more accurate picture of training load and recovery. For anyone already in the Garmin ecosystem, the Edge 1040 is not just a computer — it is the centre of the entire system.
Summary — what does the Garmin Edge 1040 offer in 2026?
The Garmin Edge 1040 is a mature, reliable, large-screen cycling computer that excels for both training and navigation. It does not have the most modern display, and the newer audio features are absent — but what it does, it does with confidence and for the long haul. With 35 hours of battery life, multi-band GPS, ClimbPro, Power Guide and Stamina, it remains one of the best choices for anyone who wants to ride long distances, reliably and with the full depth of the Garmin ecosystem.
