ZERGE’S TAKE ON THE WAHOO ELEMNT BOLT 3
STRAIGHT TO THE POINT
Who I Recommend It For
This is for riders looking for a compact cycling computer that covers navigation and training planning, but don’t want to waste time fiddling with gadgets. Most settings are done through the phone – which is way more convenient than pushing buttons on the device itself.
I use the BOLT 3 myself, and I genuinely like it. It’s simple, high-quality, and aerodynamic, so it looks great on the bike – and I don’t have to compromise on features. I even use it on my MTB, where I often run a front light and a dropper lever, so having a small, space-efficient head unit really matters.
What You'll Love About the ELEMNT BOLT 3
- The new user interface is even more streamlined, offering a smoother, more intuitive experience.
- Navigation is clear and fast from your phone – just send a location from Google Maps or Apple Maps and the device gets you there, simply and efficiently.
- Its aerodynamics are top-notch – not only saving you watts, but also making your cockpit look sleek and unified.
- Workout planning and execution are quick, clear, and easy to manage.
- The screen is anti-glare, highly readable, displays 16 million colors, and the brightness is adjustable – I’ll talk more about this below.
- Sport profiles have arrived! While Garmin has had this for a while, now the BOLT 3 lets you set up different configurations for MTB, gravel, road, or any ride type you define – from screen layouts to functional behavior.
- Music control is just a swipe away – easy to access and manage while riding.
What I Missed
- No Hungarian language support – at least for now.
- At launch, there wasn’t a full set of accessories – the box only includes the basic out-front mount. We're still waiting on at least 2–3 more mounting options, which would definitely come in handy if you ride multiple bikes.
- The global map is available in tiles via the app, but I have to manually download the regions I need. And honestly, since Wahoo already knows my location, this process could easily be automated.
The BOLT Moves Into Its Third Generation
The ELEMNT BOLT has entered its third generation, though there aren’t any major new features compared to the V2. The biggest shift is really in the user interface and platform: it now comes with a new display, and everything is managed through the brand-new Wahoo App.
The old Wahoo ELEMNT app is being phased out, and the new Wahoo App takes over everything – from configuring the device, screen layout, and data fields to navigation and workout planning.
The on-device menu system has been completely redesigned – it's much clearer and faster to navigate. One thing the BOLT 3 did lose, though, is the familiar LED indicator strip, which used to provide helpful visual cues for speed or heart rate zones during workouts.
In return, though, you get:
- a larger screen,
- persistent time display in the top-left corner,
- and a big upgrade in display technology: deeper color depth, sharper resolution, and highly adjustable backlighting – from full auto-brightness to precise manual control.
Notifications are also easy to customize – you can choose to see only calls, texts, emails, or block everything entirely for an uninterrupted ride.
This part shines a light on one of Wahoo’s current challenges compared to Garmin. It’s important to clarify: this isn’t about the direct quality or usability of their devices, but rather about the underlying concepts, development strategies, and product philosophies behind each brand.
Garmin releases dozens of new sports devices each year — on average, a new product every 2–3 weeks. From heart rate monitors to multisport watches and cycling computers, they cover the full spectrum. Wahoo, in contrast, is laser-focused on cycling computers, releasing roughly one new device per year. This difference in pace reflects a deeper difference in mindset.
Garmin: Broad Scope, Risky Innovation
Garmin’s philosophy is to pack in as many features as possible, roll them out to the market, and see what sticks. Some features arrive half-baked and are refined later — or not at all. A classic example is the light network system built into Garmin EDGE models. It’s been around for years, but never really worked reliably — yet it still lives on in the menu.
This approach creates feature-rich, complex devices deeply embedded in the Garmin ecosystem. And often, the best experience depends on pairing them with other Garmin gear.
Wahoo: Fewer Devices, Polished Simplicity
Wahoo takes a very different route. The BOLT V2, for example, was sold unchanged from May 2021 to May 2025 — a four-year product cycle. The BOLT 3 isn't a revolutionary upgrade, but rather a refined evolution, focused on platform transition and display improvements, with only a few minor additions in terms of features.
This slower cycle doesn’t reflect a lack of innovation — it’s a conscious decision. Wahoo believes in “less, but better,” aiming to deliver a device that’s simple, fast, reliable, and designed purely for cycling, without unnecessary distractions.
And while Wahoo isn’t backed by a multisport tech giant, they’re not pretending to be. Two of today’s biggest pro cycling stars, Tadej Pogačar and Mathieu van der Poel, wear luxury Richard Mille watches, but when they ride — they ride with Wahoo computers. That tells you everything you need to know about Wahoo’s credibility in the pro peloton.
With the release of the BOLT 3, ROAM 3, and ACE, Wahoo has clearly taken a more modern and refined direction. But it raises a valid question:
Why did they replace the well-known ELEMNT Companion App with a completely new Wahoo App?
And more importantly — what did we gain from this change?
New Devices, New App – and There's a Reason for That
The new Wahoo App was built specifically for the latest generation of devices — like the BOLT 3, ROAM 3, and ACE. This platform shift allows for the integration of features that simply weren’t possible with the old app, such as:
- Touchscreen control
- More detailed map layers
- Voice guidance and alerts
- Music control and even GoPro integration directly from the device
The goal of the new app is to provide a unified, modern control center for managing your cycling computers, sensors, and training plans. And it also offers seamless integration with popular third-party platforms like Strava, Komoot, TrainingPeaks, and RideWithGPS.
The ELEMNT BOLT has now entered its third generation. While there’s no major leap in core features compared to the V2, the new model arrives on a completely new platform with a new display — and that’s no coincidence.
The biggest shift didn’t happen on the device itself, but rather in the software environment. The older "Wahoo ELEMNT" app is being gradually phased out, with everything now moving over to the new Wahoo App, which has become the main control hub where you can:
- Configure how the device behaves
- Customize data fields and screen layouts
- Manage navigation and training plans
A Revamped Menu – Faster, Smarter, Cleaner
The BOLT 3’s menu system has also undergone a major upgrade. It’s now more transparent, quicker to use, and built on a more intuitive structure. The “Ready to Ride” start screen that appears on boot is a clear signal: the goal is immediate access without unnecessary digging.
A Better Display and Design
One of the most noticeable changes: the LED indicator strip is gone. These used to show speed and heart rate zones visually — and yes, some riders may miss them. But what we get in return is worth it:
- A larger, sharper display
- A persistent time display in the top-left corner
- Deeper color depth
- Higher resolution
- And incredibly flexible backlighting: auto-brightness, manual settings, adaptive brightness — everything you could ask for
The result? Not just a prettier screen, but one that’s genuinely more functional, whether you’re riding under blazing sunlight or late at night.
Notifications – Without the Distractions
One of the smart upgrades is how notifications are handled. On the BOLT 3, you can fine-tune what shows up — only calls, texts, emails, or nothing at all if you want to stay fully focused on the ride. This level of control is a noticeable step up from older models.
The Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt 3, Roam 3, and ACE all run on the same platform and share the same menu system. The key differences lie in their physical dimensions, which also affect battery life.
The touchscreen functionality complements the physical buttons, so you don't have to give up tactile control. Additionally, the ACE features a wind sensor, which provides extra data that can be especially useful for power-based training.

Which ELEMNT is right for you?
Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt 3
For performance-oriented cyclists
Recommended for those:
- who train seriously and care about aerodynamics (the Bolt is one of the most aerodynamic computers on the market);
- who want detailed training metrics, performance analysis, and navigation features;
- who prefer a compact but powerful device;
- who race or follow structured training plans regularly;
- who want a fast, responsive display with clear, customizable data fields.
Not ideal for:
- long-distance tourers or riders who rely heavily on navigation every day — the smaller screen and lack of full touchscreen can be limiting in those scenarios.
Wahoo ELEMNT Roam 3
For tourers, bikepackers, and mixed-use riders
Recommended for those:
- who want a rich navigation experience with clear, detailed maps;
- who enjoy exploring new routes and often ride in unfamiliar terrain — here, voice-guided navigation and the large, easy-to-read screen are major advantages;
- who appreciate more data, a larger display, and longer battery life;
- who ride gravel bikes, mountain bikes, touring setups, or go bikepacking.
Not ideal for:
- riders who only go on short training rides and don’t need the larger size or the higher price tag.
WAHOO ELEMNT ACE
For cyclists who measure, plan, and optimize – not just ride
The ACE is built for those who go beyond just riding — it’s for riders who want to measure, analyze, and fine-tune every aspect of their performance. With its advanced sensors and detailed display, it’s a data-lover’s dream.
Recommended for those:
- who are open to cutting-edge technology and want to benefit from real-time aerodynamic feedback via the integrated wind sensor (Wahoo Wind Dynamics™);
- who prefer a large (3.8”), touch-enabled display that delivers highly readable maps and detailed ride data;
- who need longer battery life (up to 30 hours, though real-world usage may vary);
- who want advanced navigation with voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions and rich map visuals.
Not ideal for:
- XC, trail, enduro, or cyclocross use due to its size;
- ultralight bikes where weight is a top concern.
Additional considerations:
- It’s in a higher price bracket, which may not suit every rider’s budget;
- The larger size and heavier build may not fit all bikes or handlebar setups comfortably.
Final Thoughts – How I Feel About Wahoo’s New Generation
For me, the latest Wahoo computers — the BOLT 3, ROAM 3, and ACE — have stepped up not just in features, but in feel and usability. The interface is cleaner, the new Wahoo app has made settings far more unified, and the displays have clearly evolved. What I really appreciate is how everything is faster to understand and easier to use — just like it should be when you're riding.
Maps, data, and key functions are exactly where you expect them, without endless menu diving. The whole system feels more refined and fluid, and that makes a big difference when you're out on the road or trail.
From my perspective, it’s clear that Wahoo has now fully embraced a philosophy of
fewer taps, more ride. And honestly? I think that's the right move.
