Polar Loop smart band review – Zerge's verdict
Zerge's honest opinion on the Polar Loop band.
Who is it for?
The Polar Loop is for anyone who wants Whoop-level health and recovery tracking without a subscription – sleep, HRV, training load – and doesn't want to wear a sports watch all the time. 29 grams, no display, no subscription. You buy it and that's it.
I'd recommend it most to those who already train actively and want to understand their body better: when they've truly recovered, when to ease off, and when it's safe to push hard. The Polar ecosystem – TRIMP-based load tracking, Sleep Plus Stages, SleepWise, HRV status – provides serious depth for this.
I would not recommend it to anyone who relies on automatic workout detection, or who would rather skip the phone app: the Polar Loop alone is not enough, and without the Polar Flow app the picture is incomplete. If you also want GPS data from your workouts, you'll need to bring your phone along regardless.

What you'll love about the Polar Loop
- No subscription – one purchase and that's it. No monthly or annual plan, no surprise bills. This is the only genuine Whoop alternative where the full feature set is included in the price.
- 29 grams, no display – you genuinely don't notice it – if you wear an analogue watch, a mechanical timepiece, or simply don't want to be staring at a smartwatch screen all day, the Loop gives you exactly what you're looking for: invisible background tracking, without distracting notifications. At night especially: nobody wants to sleep in a sports watch.
- Polar ecosystem – serious scientific foundations – TRIMP-based load tracking, Sleep Plus Stages sleep phase analysis, SleepWise alertness forecasting and HRV status are all metrics backed by real sports physiology. Not a 0-21 scale, but genuine cumulative load – the way the human body actually works.
- Sleep tracking – genuinely strong here – the sleep data is reliable, overnight HRV measurement is accurate, and the morning summary gives you genuinely useful information to start the day with.
- Complements what you already use – no need to give up your favourite Garmin, Suunto or mechanical watch. The Loop stays on your wrist during the day and at night, while you put on your sports watch for training. No data gaps on the days when you don't want to wear the sports watch.
- 8-day battery, replaceable – charge it once a week, and if the battery ever wears out, you can replace it. That last part is a rare privilege in 2025 – most comparable devices come with a built-in, non-replaceable battery.
What's missing from the Polar Loop
- Workout detection – this is the biggest problem – the Loop is supposed to detect workouts automatically, but in practice it often doesn't, or only partially. A 3-hour hike might end up logged as 70 minutes, a 2-hour bike ride as two separate 30-minute sessions – and there's no way to merge them afterwards. If the load calculation doesn't receive the full workout, the recovery metrics will be off too – and that undermines the entire logic of the device.
- No HR broadcast – the Loop cannot transmit heart rate data to other devices – a bike computer, Garmin watch or gym equipment. It has only one Bluetooth channel, and that is occupied by the phone sync. It doesn't matter much, but you cannot use it as an external heart rate sensor.
- No alarm – and for me personally, this is a serious omission. I buy a sleep tracker, strap it on at night, and in the morning I'm still woken up by my phone, an alarm clock or my partner. There's no way to check the time either: no display, no vibration, nothing. I sleep in a sports watch precisely because of this – at least that shows the time and vibrates quietly to wake me, without waking the whole room. A minimal, unobtrusive red LED for the time, or a simple vibration motor for an alarm – that's not a luxury on a device like this, it's a basic expectation. I've looked at the market: nobody does it. And nobody seems to understand why not.
- No skin temperature measurement – the Polar 360 business version measures overnight skin temperature, the consumer Loop does not. This is a particularly noticeable gap for female users who want to track changes related to their menstrual cycle or pregnancy.
- The Polar Flow app isn't where it needs to be yet – Polar itself admitted the app is "not awesome". The redesigned interface looks promising but is arriving in phases, and the current version falls well short of the Whoop app experience. Editing workouts in detail after the fact – something many users are asking for – is not yet possible.
A closer look
The Loop's greatest strength is also its simplest: you don't notice it's there. 29 grams, no display, no vibration, nothing to remind you it exists. At night especially – anyone who has ever tried sleeping in a sports watch knows exactly what I mean. You simply forget the Loop is on your wrist.
The Polar Flow ecosystem brings serious depth behind the scenes: TRIMP-based load tracking, Sleep Plus Stages sleep phase analysis and SleepWise alertness forecasting are all metrics backed by real sports physiology. When you open the app in the morning, you don't see a smiley face – you see data. Serious users will appreciate that.
1. Loop only – daily activity and sleep monitoring
If you've ever seriously committed to understanding your sleep – not just how many hours you got, but why you still wake up tired after eight hours – the Loop can be a useful tool. In the morning it shows how recovered you are, what your HRV looked like, and whether your body considers you ready for the day. These aren't abstract numbers: if you went to bed late, had a glass of wine too many, or had a stressful day, you'll see it in the data the next morning.
The SleepWise feature also shows when you'll be at your most alert during the day – and when that afternoon slump is coming that so many people try to push through with coffee. If you can see it in advance, you can plan your day more deliberately: when to schedule important meetings, and when the ideal moment for a short rest might be.
In this segment, Whoop and Oura Ring are the two main competitors. Whoop is strong on app experience and daily summaries, but requires a monthly subscription. The Oura Ring is a comfortable and accurate sleep tracker, but its ring format doesn't suit everyone, and it too has moved to a subscription model. The Loop offers comparable depth of sleep and recovery tracking without a subscription – which makes a meaningful difference to the total cost over two to three years.
It's ideal for anyone who wears a mechanical watch, doesn't want to wear a smartwatch, or has simply had enough of constant notifications – but still wants to understand what their body is doing at night. The Loop doesn't interrupt, doesn't ask for attention – it just collects the data, and you check what it says in the morning.
2. Polar Loop + Polar watch
This is the most natural combination – and the strongest. You wear the Loop during the day and at night, put on the Polar watch for training, and Polar Flow assembles the complete picture within a single ecosystem. Load, recovery and sleep data all appear in one place and reinforce each other.
One thing worth highlighting here: Polar has solved the duplicate recording problem. If you're wearing both the watch and the Loop during a workout, Flow doesn't log the same session twice – this was addressed in a dedicated update. That's not something to take for granted: in the Garmin ecosystem, using an Edge bike computer and a Garmin watch in parallel still produces duplicated data in Garmin Connect today. The Garmin watch will even send an inactivity alert after a 5-hour ride, because it simply has no way of knowing you were recording on the computer all along. In Polar Flow, this problem doesn't exist.
If you already own a Polar watch, the Loop is not an optional extra – it is a meaningful upgrade: this is where TRIMP-based load tracking works best, where the morning summary is most informative, and where recovery status is estimated most accurately. The ecosystem runs cleanest in this combination.
3. Polar Loop + Garmin, Coros or Apple Watch
This is the most common real-world scenario – and the least seamless. The Polar Loop and a Garmin, Coros or Apple Watch operate in separate ecosystems, and the data doesn't come together automatically. Workout data lives in Garmin Connect, the Health app or the Coros app, while sleep and recovery data lives in Polar Flow – and connecting the two is the user's job. What does work in this combination: the Loop reliably tracks sleep and daily activity while the sports watch handles workout recording. In the case of the Apple Watch, this is a particularly interesting pairing: the Apple Watch is a strong smartwatch and a decent training tool, while the Loop adds deeper sleep and HRV analysis – providing data the Apple Watch simply cannot offer due to its lack of continuous HRV measurement. If sleep and HRV data are your primary need and you're already happy with your sports watch, this combination is viable – just don't expect the two systems to talk to each other automatically. The absence of HR broadcast is noticeable here too: the Loop cannot be connected as a heart rate sensor to a bike computer or sports watch.
4. Polar Loop + bike computer (Bryton, Edge, Wahoo, Hammerhead)
Cyclists are in a particular position: they use a computer rather than a watch during training – and Polar doesn't make a bike computer. That means the Loop will almost always be paired with a bike computer from a different ecosystem.
The combination is viable, but its limitations are worth knowing. Workout data – power, speed, route – lives in Garmin Connect, the Wahoo app or Hammerhead. The Loop meanwhile tracks sleep, recovery and daily activity in Polar Flow. The two systems don't communicate: Flow has no visibility of the training load recorded by the computer, which means the recovery estimate remains incomplete – from the Loop's perspective, a 5-hour mountain ride can look identical to a day spent at a desk.
What does work in this combination: sleep tracking and overnight HRV measurement are entirely independent of workout recording. If your main goal is to understand how you sleep, when you truly recover, and how training load affects your overnight restoration – the Loop is a valuable tool for that on its own. The absence of HR broadcast is noticeable here too: the Loop cannot be connected as a heart rate sensor to the computer, so it won't replace your chest strap or arm-based heart rate monitor.
Summary
The Polar Loop is a product whose value depends entirely on how you use it. On its own as a sleep and recovery tracker it is surprisingly capable – particularly for anyone who wears a mechanical watch or simply doesn't want to wear a smartwatch. Paired with a Polar watch the ecosystem runs at its cleanest and delivers the most. It also works alongside a Garmin, Coros or Apple Watch, as long as you're clear about what you're asking of it: sleep data and HRV yes, shared training load calculation don't expect.
What holds true across every scenario: there is nothing else like this on the market without a subscription. Whoop charges a monthly fee, and Oura Ring has moved to the same model. The Loop is a one-time purchase – and over two to three years that is a meaningful difference in total cost.
I would not recommend it to anyone who expects HR broadcast, or who would rely on workout detection as a primary function. The Polar Flow app experience is still a work in progress – anyone used to the simplicity of the Whoop app will need patience. But the hardware is convincing, the sleep tracking is strong, and Polar is clearly taking the development seriously. Buying it now makes you an early adopter of a promising product – not a finished one, but not an empty promise either.
