Garmin Speed Sensor 2
The Speed Sensor 2 is a wireless speed sensor that mounts on your wheel hub, tracking wheel rotations to calculate speed and distance data as you ride.
How It Works
The sensor is motion-activated: it wakes up automatically after two wheel revolutions, indicated by five seconds of green LED flashing. When the battery is low, the LED flashes red instead. Depending on the shape of your wheel hub, the sensor may sit slightly tilted once mounted — this has no effect on its accuracy.
Pairing and Connection
The sensor communicates with compatible Garmin devices using ANT+ and Bluetooth wireless technology. The first time you connect, the device and sensor need to be paired; after that, the connection is established automatically and securely each time the sensor is activated, as long as it's within range of the device.
While pairing, keep the device within 3 m of the sensor, and stay at least 10 m away from other wireless sensors to avoid accidentally connecting to the wrong device. The sensor can pair with up to two Bluetooth devices at once, along with any number of ANT+ devices.
Connecting to the Garmin Connect App
The Speed Sensor 2 can be paired directly with a smartphone through the Garmin Connect app, without the need for another Garmin device — paired within the app itself, not through the phone's Bluetooth settings.
Once paired, the sensor is recognized automatically each time it's activated, letting speed and distance data from your rides be recorded and uploaded straight to your phone.
Your Garmin Connect account then lets you store your activities, dive into detailed performance analysis — time, distance, speed charts — and share your results with friends.

Replacing the Speed Sensor Battery
The sensor uses one CR2032 battery. The LED flashes red after two revolutions to indicate a low battery level.
- Remove the sensor from its sleeve.
- Locate the circular battery cover on the front of the sensor.
- Rotate the cover counter-clockwise until it's loose enough to remove.
- Remove the cover and the battery.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Insert the new battery into the cover, observing polarity. Be careful not to damage or lose the O-ring gasket.
- Align the cover markers, then rotate the cover clockwise until it locks into place.
After the battery is replaced, the LED flashes red and green for a few seconds. Once it flashes green and stops, the sensor is active and ready to send data.
